Woodz – Human Extinction: Reflecting on the wonders of humanity

As promised yesterday I’m looking at Woodz’ new single ‘Human Extinction’ today which was also released on Thursday. Woodz, who has started out as  a member of Uniq has steadily build an impressive solo career. Last year he dominated the Korean charts with his 2023 song drowning. Now he released his first full length album, and it contains a total of 17 songs.

In ‘Human Extinction’ Woodz reflects on the imperfections of humanity, on the duality of seeking closeness and trying to hide from others. The opening lines already show this, one the one hand not knowing himself, on the other hand feeling that his existence alone is a sin:

난 모르겠어 날 음

내 존재의 죄가 또

“I don’t know myself… um.

The sin of my existence, again.”

Vocabulary & grammar breakdown

1. 난 모르겠어 날

  • 나는 → 난 = contraction (“I” + topic marker)
  • 모르다 → 모르겠어 = “I don’t know / I can’t understand”
  • –겠– expresses uncertainty or inability
  • = contraction of 나를 (“me,” object marker)

→ Means “I don’t understand myself.”

2.

  • Filler sound similar to “um” or “hmm”

Often used in lyrics to show hesitation or reflection.

3. 내 존재의 죄가

  • 내 존재 = “my existence”
  • –의 = possessive marker (“of”)
  • = “sin / guilt / wrongdoing”
  • –가 = subject marker

→ Means “the sin of my existence.”

4.

  • Means “again / once more”
  • Indicates repetition or recurrence

→ Suggests the thought or feeling keeps returning.

Woodz is not calling out for human extinction, imo he is questioning how we managed to stay alive when we are all so fragile and hurt.
