Umyull – Wind;Decoy: Catching the wind

Umyull is back with a new single: 바람잡이 (the English title is ‘Wind; Decoy’), in their typical and unimitable style. The lyrics are a reflection on creative struggle and identity.

Creating something meaningful means chasing what you can’t fully understand, doubting yourself constantly, and continuing anyway—even without proof you’re good enough. It can feel like catching the wind, something that is ephemeral and seems to slip away again and again. Even though you are not able to hold on to it, you still continue, even though you seem to fall deeper into frustration, you need to persevere.

One part that especially speaks to me is the lines I’m analysing: ‘Invisible Talent’, here Umyull expresses the same thought that Picasso did when he said ‘Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working’. In art and music, talent is often cited as the only thing required, but it is not, more important is perseverance and hard work.

눈에 보이지 않는 재능이란

글자에 포기하고 싶어도

“This so-called invisible ‘talent’ —

even if I want to give up on that idea…”

Vocabulary & grammar breakdown

1. 눈에 보이지 않는 재능이란

  • 눈에 = “to the eye / in sight”
  • 보이다 → 보이지 않는 = “not visible / cannot be seen”
  • 재능 = “talent”
  • –이란 = contraction of –이라는 (“called / so-called”)

→ Structure: [verb-(지 않는) + noun + (이)란]

= “the thing called ‘talent that can’t be seen.’”

2. –지 않는 (negative attributive form)

  • From –지 않다 = “not do / not be”
  • 보이지 않는 = “that is not seen”

→ Used to modify nouns in a descriptive way.

3. 글자에 포기하고 싶어도

  • 글자 = “letters / words”
  • –에 = “to / toward” (target of action)
  • 포기하다 = “to give up”
  • –고 싶다 = “to want to…”
  • –아/어도 = “even if”

→ “even if (I) want to give up on those words.”

4. –고 싶어도 (desire + concession)

Combines:

  • –고 싶다 (“want to”)
  • –아/어도 (“even if”)

→ Pattern: verb + –고 싶어도

= “even if I want to…”

What this song’s lyrics really tell me, and why I love this, is: don’t give up on creating something you love. It will be difficult and hard, but do the work!
