IVE – Blackhole: A mystery wrapped in lyrics

Today marks the day of IVE’s comeback. Two weeks ago, they released their pre-release single ‘Bang Bang’. Today, they are releasing their new EP titled ‘Revive+’, featuring the title track ‘Blackhole’.

The lyrics revolve around conquering fear and pursuing grander aspirations, transforming wishes into reality, and expressing one’s desires. However, they also delve into the perils and the passionate love that can potentially consume you.

Let’s look at these lines:

두려울 게 없어 내겐

새로운 걸 보여줄게

꿈을 더 꿈꿔봐도 돼

끝내 현실이 돼

“I have nothing to fear.

I’ll show you something new.

You can keep dreaming bigger —

it will eventually become real.”

Vocabulary & grammar breakdown

1. 두려울 게 없어 내겐

  • 두렵다 → 두려울 = future/attributive form
  • 것 → 게 = contracted form
  • 없다 → 없어 = “there isn’t”
  • 내겐 = contraction of 내게는 (“for me”)

→ Pattern: –(으)ㄹ 게 없다

= “there is nothing to (verb).”

→ “There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

2. 새로운 걸 보여줄게

  • 새롭다 → 새로운 = attributive form
  • 것 → 걸 = contracted object form
  • 보여주다 = “to show (to someone)”
  • –ㄹ게 = “I will (promise/intention)”

→ Pattern: verb + –ㄹ게 expresses speaker’s intention.

3. 꿈을 더 꿈꿔봐도 돼

  • 꿈을 꿈꾸다 = “to dream a dream” (object repetition common in Korean)
  • = “more / even more”
  • –아/어 보다 = “to try (doing)”
  • –아/어도 되다 = “it’s okay to…”

→ Means: “It’s okay to try dreaming even bigger.”

4. 끝내 현실이 돼

  • 끝내 = “in the end / eventually”
  • 현실 = “reality”
  • –이 되다 → 돼 = “become”

→ Pattern: N + 이 되다 = “to become (noun).”

I must admit, I’m a bit puzzled about the title and lyrics of this song. Do you have a theory on why it’s called ‘Blackhole’?
