Fin.K.L – To My Boyfriend: Sunday Throwback

As it’s customary here, I reserve Sundays for reminiscing about older K-pop songs. Today, I chose a song from the group and album that initially introduced me to K-pop: ‘내 남자 친구에게’ (To My Boyfriend) from the ‘Fine Killing Liberty : Blue Rain’ album by the first-generation superstars Fin.K.L.

This song achieved massive popularity in 1998 and remained popular into early 1999 when I was studying in Seoul. While the lyrics may seem simplistic compared to contemporary K-pop, it’s important to remember that this was a summer song where a girl expressed her hopes for her boyfriend, promising him everything and making plans to catch his attention (such as wearing a skirt for the first time to draw his notice). However, it’s worth noting that this was 28 years ago, and our understanding of gender roles has fortunately evolved.

Without further ado, here are today’s (overly sweet) lines:

내모든걸 원한다면 너에게 줄게

지금이대로 너의 품속에

나를 데려가줘 난 니꺼야

“If you want all of me, I’ll give it to you.

Hold me in your arms just as I am.

Take me with you — I belong to you.”

Vocabulary & grammar breakdown

1. 내 모든걸 원한다면 너에게 줄게

  • 내 모든 것 → 내 모든걸 = “my everything” (것 + 을 → 걸 contraction)
  • 원하다 → 원한다면 = “if (you) want” (–다면 = conditional “if”)
  • 너에게 = “to you”
  • 주다 → 줄게 = “I’ll give” (–ㄹ게 = speaker’s promise/intention)

→ Pattern: verb-(는)다면 + verb-(ㄹ게)

= “If you want…, I’ll give…”

2. 지금이대로 너의 품속에

  • 지금 = “now”
  • –이대로 = “just like this / as it is”
  • 너의 = “your”
  • 품속 = “arms / embrace” (literally “inside the arms”)
  • –에 = location/direction marker

→ Means “just as I am, into your arms.”

3. 나를 데려가줘

  • 나를 = “me” (object marker)
  • 데려가다 = “to take (someone) along”
  • –아/어 주다 → 데려가줘 = “please take me”

→ Pattern: verb + –아/어 줘

= request meaning “please do (this) for me.”

4. 난 니꺼야

  • 나는 → 난 = “I” (topic contraction)
  • 니꺼 = “yours” (너의 것 → 니꺼, informal spoken form)
  • –야 = informal “is”

→ Means “I’m yours.”

When did you first discover K-pop? And are there any older groups you still enjoy listening to?
