So, today is the day BTS comes back, what a great opportunity to delve into more independent minded music: Effie with her latest release Red Horse. The music is Effie as we know it and the lyrics as well. Effie isn’t bound by norms or contracts in what she says and does. Here she is talking about her life, her struggles, but also her successes.  

How she only cried when she was 20, how she saw herself smiling on a photograph for the first time when she was 24, and now, in her 25th year (Korean age), she can be heard on the radio. In 2026, the year of the Fire Horse, she is running like a red horse.

Here are three (adjacent) lines from hte lyrics:

갈 땐 가더라도 한 입만

착해빠져갖곤 못 쓴다

“Ganadaramabasa-a, hakuna matata.

Even if you’re going to go, just one bite.

Being too nice won’t do.”

1. 가나다라마바사아 하쿠나마타타

• 가나다라마바사아 = playful sound, recitation of the beginning of the Korean alphabet  (onomatopoeic / rhythmic filler)
• 하쿠나마타타 = “hakuna matata” (loan phrase meaning “no worries”)

→ No strict grammar — purely stylistic.

2. 갈 땐 가더라도 한 입만

• 가다 → 갈 땐 = “when (you) go” (–ㄹ 때는 → 땐)
• 가더라도 = “even if (you) go” (–더라도 = strong concession)
• 한 입 = “one bite”
• –만 = “only / just”

→ Pattern: –더라도

= “even if (something happens anyway).”

3. 착해빠져갖곤 못 쓴다

• 착하다 = “to be kind / nice”
• –해빠지다 = intensifier meaning “too much / excessively”
• → 착해빠지다 = “to be overly nice”
• –갖곤 = contraction of –가지고는 (“with / being…”)
• 못 쓰다 = “to be no good / not acceptable”

→ Means: “Being too nice won’t work / is no good.”

4. –더라도 vs –아/어도

• –더라도 = stronger, more emphatic “even if”
• Used when the condition doesn’t change the outcome

→ Example from lyric:

가더라도 = “even if (you) go anyway.”

Being too nice won’t work, Yena would second that, I guess. But musically Effie is a different beast to all idols, this music is raw and elemental.
