Baby DONT Cry – Shapeshifter: Back with a new vibe

Baby DONT Cry have released ‘Shapeshifter’, their pre-release single for their upcoming EP ‘After Cry’, which is set to be released on March 24. In my opinion, they have indeed shifted the musical direction of their music. While their previous singles leaned more towards pop-rock and pop-punk, this one feels different yet maintains the same attitude.

The lyrics boast about their versatility and express that they cannot be confined to a single concept. Here are some lines from the chorus:

낮과 밤이 함께 있는 얼굴로

열두 번의 계절 같은 맘으로

태어나는 기분이야, that’s me

“With a face holding both day and night,

with a heart like twelve seasons,

it feels like I’m being born again — that’s me.”

Vocabulary & grammar breakdown

1. 낮과 밤이 함께 있는 얼굴로

  • = “day”
  • = “night”
  • –과 = “and”
  • 함께 = “together”
  • 있다 → 있는 = present attributive form
  • 얼굴 = “face”
  • –로 = “with / as” (indicating state or manner)

→ “with a face where day and night exist together.”

2. 열두 번의 계절 같은 맘으로

  • 열두 번 = “twelve times”
  • –의 = possessive marker (“of”)
  • 계절 = “season”
  • 같은 = “like / similar to” (attributive form of 같다)
  • = shortened form of 마음 (“heart / feelings”)
  • –으로 = “with / in the state of”

→ “with a heart like twelve seasons.”

3. 태어나는 기분이야

  • 태어나다 = “to be born”
  • 태어나는 = present attributive form
  • 기분 = “feeling / sensation”
  • –이야 = informal “is”

→ “it’s the feeling of being born.”

4. –로 / –으로 (state or manner marker)

  • Used to express the way or condition in which something happens

Examples from the lyric:

  • 얼굴로 = “with a face…”
  • 맘으로 = “with a heart…”

In my opinion, the change in musical style suits them perfectly. It also somehow reminds me of their first two songs, which were produced by Soyeon, who also will not be confined to a single style or genre.
