ALL(H)OURS – Dead Man Walking

ALL(H)OURS (올아워즈) released their fifth EP today, titled ‘No Doupt’. The EP is brimming with energy, channeling the prime k-pop boy group vibe. The title song ‘Dead Man Walking’ hits hard, and the visuals, as well as the lyrics, are dark and intense.

The lyrics, at least for me, conjure images of vampires or a fall from grace or heaven.

Let’s delve into these lines from the second verse:

물어뜯길수록 강해져

징그럽게 우린 되살아나

이 판을 헤집어

“The more we’re ripped apart, the stronger we get.

We keep coming back to life, brutally.

We rip this whole game apart.”

Vocabulary & grammar breakdown

1. 물어뜯길수록 강해져

  • 물어뜯다 = “to bite and tear apart”
  • 물어뜯기다 = passive (“to be torn apart / attacked”)
  • –ㄹ수록 = “the more… the more…”
  • 강해지다 → 강해져 = “to become stronger”

→ Pattern: –(으)ㄹ수록

Example:

많이 연습할수록 실력이 좋아져

“The more you practice, the better you get.”

2. 징그럽게 우린 되살아나

  • 징그럽게 = “disgustingly / relentlessly / fiercely”
  • 우린 = contraction of 우리는 (“we”)
  • 되살아나다 = “to revive / come back to life”

→ Means coming back repeatedly in a stubborn or relentless way.

3. 이 판을

  • = “this”
  • = “board / stage / game / scene”
  • –을 = object marker

→ In slang, can mean the whole situation or arena.

4. 헤집어

  • 헤집다 = “to rip open / stir up / tear apart”
  • 헤집어 = imperative or present casual form

이 판을 헤집어

= “tear up this whole game/scene.”

The music video and song appear to be significantly darker compared to their previous releases. I’m curious to know your thoughts on this song.
