Loona – “Hi High,” a bright start to a story

Sundays are our time to reminisce about K-pop history. It’s mostly because there aren’t usually any new releases on Sundays, so it makes perfect sense to look back at some amazing moments from the past. And on this last Sunday of January, it just feels right to revisit Loona’s full group debut from Summer 2018.

Why, you ask? Well, January marks the first full album of Chuu, the collaboration between underscores and Yves, and the debut of Hyunjin as the drummer with Latency (while ARTMS is currently touring Europe and Gowon has also signed with a new entertainment company). So, this month has already been filled with releases from former Loona members, which makes it a great time to look back at that group’s bright beginning.

The lyrics I chose for today are:

“쉽진 않을걸

비밀이 좀 많아

나의 사랑 쉽게 주고 싶지는 않아”

which translates to:

“It won’t be easy.

I’ve got quite a few secrets.

I don’t want to give my love away so easily.”

쉽진 않을걸 It won’t be easy

swipjin aneulgeol

  • 쉽다 – to be easy, verb
  • -지 않다 – this negates the verb it is placed after
  • -ㄹ 걸 -> -ㄹ 것을 – this makes the whole sentence an assumption

The tone used here is that used among friends who know each other well.

비밀이많아 – I’ve got quite a few secrets.

bimiri jom mana

  • 비밀 – secret
  • 이 – subject suffix
  • 많다many, plentiful
  • 좀 – a little, making the sentence ambiguous and playful. She has many secrets, or not so many?

나의사랑쉽게주고싶지는않아 – I don’t want to give my love away so easily.

naui sarang swipge jugo sipjineun ana

  • I
  • -의 – possessive suffix, appended to I it makes it ‘My’
  • 사랑love

나의사랑쉽게주고싶지는않아 – I don’t want to give my love away so easily.

naui sarang swipge jugo sipjineun ana

  • 쉽다 – again: to be easy
  • 게주다to give -> to give easily
  • 싶다 -> to wish
  • -지는 않다 -> the same construction as in the first sentence, it negates the verb before it.

I usually end my posts with a question, and as I’ve changed my writing style today, my question is about my own style.

Do you prefer a post like this, with more clarity and less interpretation, or do you enjoy the style of my older posts?
